Personality:

Leo definitely lives up to the title "White Knight Leo." Talk about a white knight! He is so heroic, valiant, and dedicated to his cause that it's almost ridiculous. He follows his superiors' orders without question. ...That is, until a bit too much evidence arises that indicates another cause is more virtuous. It is hard for him to just heel-turn, though. His sense of loyalty is hard to shake, sometimes to his detriment. Deep down, he strives to do what's right for the world more than anything, and if he's aligned himself with a faction, he's definitely done enough research to have trust firmly planted. In a lot of cases, he favors more religious causes because he's under the impression religion is the greatest source of good and purity.

Ultimately, his loyalty can make him do some really careless things. When he gets motivated, he gets so trusting in its principle that he almost goes on autopilot, believing that Althena (Lunar's goddess) is on his side and will make him emerge victorious, no matter what. When the reality of his carelessness does sink in, it hits him like a splash of cold water. But when things don't go well, he'd still rather blame himself than admit his authority figure is wrong. Ideally he'd blame failure on someone who caused it and chock it up to hooliganism, but still.

Said hooliganism is what he tends to target most. He believes in making the world a better place by essentially preaching to the lowlifes about making life choices for the better. In fact, if he doesn't make a significant impact on the world and turn a butt-ton of people over to the side of good, he'll consider his life a failure and as such fears it. Like most people, he's afraid of failure, but one he's imposed upon himself (instead of society forcing him into it, that is). He also has to believe that such holiness can actually be achieved and that his goals aren't impossible. To discover otherwise would probably throw him into some sort of life crisis. If he can't better Lunar the Earth and affect lives, what is he fighting for

...Well, he did discover he likes adventuring and took a break from heroics to focus on making HIMSELF better for a while. But he was intending to eventually find a new cause and take it up all over again!

Additionally, he's also really afraid of being dishonored or shamed, especially in front of his superiors. Being labeled a traitor would force him to find a new allegiance--probably one he doesn't agree with--and that would be aaaawwwful. So, when he actually is accused of treason (but not held to it), he dawns his Mystere persona to fight the good fight while keeping a low profile. That is, if you consider acting like a comic book superhero and declaring how you are Not Leo a low profile.

Again, since he's a knight, he acts like a stereotypical (old English fairy tale-style) knight. He's melodramatic in everything he talks about, especially orders he gives. He's naturally like that, too; it's not like he took up the habit when he was recruited as Althena's White Knight. The title is just quite apropos. When things go wrong, he shakes his fist in the air and vows to never forgive and never forget. Except he does, if he determines the person to be on the side of good. Good trumps personal vendettas. As long as he feels he's doing the Goddess's and her associates' work, he doesn't beat himself up over it. He just gets dramatic and showy.

He's Leo. He's so loyal and valiant, he's a knight. He's so pure at heart, he's a white knight. White Knight Leo. Yup.

Backstory:
Leo was born and raised in the small town of Raculi on the moon planet of Lunar alongside his little sister, Mauri, and his close friend, Ronfar. Their parents were uninteresting in their lack of drama and constant outpouring of support, so his home life was simple and happy. At least it was until the town--and his little sister--came down with a horrible disease.

Ronfar, being a competent priest of Althena, did his best to rid his lover of her ailment to no avail. As a last-ditch effort, he obtained a potion from the nearest shrine of Althena. Little did Ronfar know that the church was corrupt and his potion was really the blood of Zophar, an evil, very powerful being who was building up power to (you guessed it) take over the world. Mauri was the only one afflicted with the epidemic that survived it, but her personality changed upon recovery. She became very cruel and unforgiving. It was enough to drive a wedge between her and Ronfar, and with the end of their relationship came a crumbling of the world Leo had known. Ronfar left to go indulge in some bad habits while sulking over his lost love and Mauri left to serve Zophar under the guise of carrying out the Althena's bidding. Leo had no reason to stay, so he too channeled his angst into serving a higher cause, namely the goddess Althena and all the good she could bring to Lunar.

Unfortunately for him, his timing couldn't have been worse. An impostor had appeared, claiming to be the newest incarnation of Althena. She used pretty words about faith and reward to drive believers to follow her orders, but Leo didn't really need convincing. She said she was the goddess, and although it sounded unlikely, Althena did reincarnate every 50 years or so, so if all the priests in the church (aka "the Chosen") say it's her, why should he doubt her? Especially since she appointed him her White Knight early in due to his bravery and loyalty. As fate may have it, Mauri was appointed Althena's Red Wizard. But this fake Althena was planted by Zophar, who was laying low and gaining strength as she spread fear and hatred through religious corruption.

His job under Althena was pretty straightforward: protect the world from evil. Most of the time, this entailed finding any naysayers and arresting them. Leo didn't think to question the authenticity of Althena's claims of conspiracy or slander. It wasn't until he was given stern orders to find and kill the "Destroyer" that anything regarding his loyalty changed.

Leo was instructed to head to the Blue Spire and seek out a person said to be the Destroyer of the world. He was told she would seek out Althena and annihilate everything, so off he went, piloting his giant land-ship, the Dragonship Destiny. He ran into a young adventurer named Hiro and warned him about staying in the area. Little did he know he was witnessing the start of 3 discs-worth of epic storytelling.

The Destroyer turned out to be a girl named Lucia, who was tasked with guarding the Blue Star until it was hospitable again. She had noticed Zophar's awakening and was in turn on a quest to eliminate him at all costs. And so, lots of things happened: Leo tried to track down Hiro and Lucia and missed them quite a few times. Ronfar joined Hiro to help Lucia find Althena to inform her of the danger Lunar was in. Ronfar at one point lied to Leo boldfaced to help Lucia and later locked a careless Leo in his own cell for the same reason. Leo was furious. He considered their friendship ruined and decided he didn't care if Ronfar stood between him and Lucia; he would kill her and stop Lunar's ruination, no matter what.

Leo eventually caught up with Lucia and co. in the small town of Azado. At first, he ordered them all to be restrained, but they revealed to him that the high priest knew Althena to be a fake and that all the deaths in the area weren't caused by Lucia but by red magic under the command of the Chosen. Ronfar took Leo to the high priest, and they found him dying on the floor, crying over how he'd done what the Chosen had told him (give them details about Lucia's whereabouts) but was punished anyway. Leo was horrified.

Determined to get to the bottom of this, he escorted Lucia and Hiro to Althena. Lucia immediately detected the fake Althena as an imposter and got thrown in jail along with Hiro and her traveling party. Leo witnessed how harshly Althena reacted, which confirmed his suspicions. He was also accused of helping Lucia despite knowing what shame Lucia would bring to the church. With his loyalty already in question, he didn't feel right outwardly helping Hiro and Lucia. What could he do...?

Become a masked SUPERHERO.

As Mystere, the mysterious benefactor, he helped them all escape. They all saw through his shabby disguise (a mask. Same clothes, same everything. Just a mask. And only over his eyes!), but it did the trick. Unfortunately, he had to lay low and do as he was told once they were free in order to ensure he'd keep his position as White Knight. He wished them luck and the group left to find the four dragons whose power would help defeat Zophar.

He ran into them later in Raculi. Mauri was in charge of the Red Dragon Aura and she was their last stop in their quest for the dragon auras. Ronfar was still very dedicated to bringing Mauri back to normal, but Leo knew the blood of Zophar was too strong. She was killing innocent villagers, and as much as he hated it, he admitted that killing her would be the only likely way of stopping her wrath. Ronfar shot that idea down pretty darn fast and asked if there was another way. Leo thought about it for a moment and told them that if someone were to enter her mind in a dream state, they could help her fight Zophar's power until she was her old, gentle self. The only problem was that that person may not wake up. Ronfar volunteered anyway.

They found Mauri in Serak Palace. Lucia used the Aura of Althena to ...get Ronfar to enter Mauri's subconscious. (No, really, that's how they describe it. It's not me being too lazy to look up what happened... It is just THAT vague.) Ronfar succeeded and Mauri was finally cured of Zophar's power. Leo's little sister and best friend were reunited, and that made Leo happier than he'd been in a very long time.

However, he was still upset at how much plight he caused by serving a corrupt faction. He doubted his own competence and meaning in life. Was he destined to bring strife fueled by good intentions? How was he to be sure these events wouldn't happen again? He relieved himself of the group's presence and spent days sulking in self-doubt. Eventually he decided that he didn't have to have all the answers right now. He knew that Zophar was at the verge of reaching his full power and destroying everything, and Lunar's best hope was Hiro and his party. Hiro's was a good cause, he knew, at least. By the time he found Hiro again, Zophar had captured Lucia and holed up in Zophar's Keep. The five of them set off to stop Zophar and rescue Lucia.

They all met with some difficult trials in the Keep, but through an epic fight they managed to weaken Zophar enough to release Lucia. She would be the only one who could seal him away again, but she was missing the power of Althena he had taken from her. Leo and the others gave her a pep talk about real power coming from human devotion and love, and so Lucia tapped into that power inside her to restore her magic powers and enable to effectively defeat Zophar once and for all. Success!

When everyone in the group decided to go back to their lives with enlightened senses of purpose, Leo realized he had nothing to go back to in terms of a life purpose. Althena turned out to be a fake and they had learned during their travels that the real Althena chose to remain a human around a century prior and passed on for good. Through some soul searching, he realized he had a thirst for sailing and exploring, and so he decided to split off in search of new adventure.

It didn't take long before he found himself in Hiro's company again. As it turned out, Lucia's purpose was fulfilled and she went back to the Blue Star--ditching Hiro, pretty much. She felt that her duty was more to the Blue Star than to living out life with the one she loved. Hiro disagreed and asked for help from his friends to get to the Blue Star himself. Leo fought alongside them all one last time and escorted Hiro to the Blue Spire where he teleported away supposedly forever to live on the Blue Star with Lucia.

Leo went back to his life of adventuring but found his thoughts wandering to what Hiro and Lucia might be experiencing on giant mystery that was the Blue Star. He hadn't heard from Hiro since he left, and thinking about it, he decided not only could he look for Hiro, but he could also explore that big, blue mass that hovered over their land his entire life. With the guardian Lucia no longer present to keep curious idiots away, Leo touched the teleportation crystal and wound up just a mountain away from Smash Academy.

Unfortunately, seeking adventure on another planet didn't pan out as well as one would hope. Leo had stayed in a spare dorm overnight his first night there. The thought of growing minds needing aid in becoming upstanding citizens intrigued him. Feeling that helping them would fulfill his wallowing desire to serve a higher purpose, he decided to stay at the quaint little school and serve as a security guard so the youth could grow into saintly, law-abiding adults.

Anything Else?: He speaks with archaic grammar.
